What determines whether solar is worth it?
Compare the value of the electricity a system may produce with the full project cost. That includes financing, maintenance, roof work, electrical upgrades, batteries, and the incentives or utility rules that actually apply.
Your electricity costs
The more electricity you use, and the more expensive that electricity is, the more potential value solar can create.
Your roof and sunlight
Shade, roof direction, usable space, roof age, and structural complexity affect production and installation cost.
The system economics
Compare system price, expected production, incentives, financing costs, equipment, and required roof or electrical work.
How long you benefit
Solar is a long-term investment. The economics usually improve when you expect to own the home or system long enough to recover the cost.
Solar tends to make more sense when
- You have a meaningful electric bill.
- Your roof gets good sun with limited shade.
- Your roof is in reasonable condition.
- The system price is competitive and clearly itemized.
- Financing costs are reasonable if you are not paying cash.
- You expect to stay in the home for several years.
- The proposal uses realistic production assumptions.
Solar may be a poor fit when
- Heavy shade covers most usable roof space.
- The roof needs replacement soon.
- Very little roof area is available.
- Electrical upgrades add substantial cost.
- Electricity usage is unusually low.
- You expect to move soon.
- The proposal depends on aggressive production, rate, or incentive assumptions.
A simple way to think about it
This is a screening calculation, not a complete financial model. It does not capture financing costs, maintenance, degradation, changing utility rates, taxes, incentives, roof work, or the time value of money.
Run the numbers for your home
Use your electric bill, rate, and solar assumptions to estimate annual usage, solar production, and potential first-year electricity value. Then replace the starting assumptions with the site-specific production and pricing in a real proposal.
