Solar quote checklist

How to compare solar quotes

The cheapest monthly payment is not always the best deal. Compare system size, expected production, total cost, equipment, financing, warranties, and ownership on the same basis.

Price • Production • Equipment • Ownership

Compare these six things on every quote

  • System size: compare total system size in kW and make sure similar proposals are being compared.
  • Expected production: look at estimated annual kWh, shading assumptions, panel orientation, degradation, and whether the estimate seems realistic.
  • Total price: compare the cash price, price per watt, financing fees, interest, escalators, and total payments over time.
  • Equipment: compare panels, inverter type, battery if included, monitoring, and any electrical or roof work included in the price.
  • Ownership and incentives: know who owns the system, who receives available incentives, and what happens if you sell the home.
  • Warranties and service: check equipment warranties, workmanship coverage, service responsibilities, cancellation terms, and any production guarantees.

Red flags to watch for

  • A quote focuses only on the monthly payment.
  • Production assumptions are unusually aggressive.
  • The cash price is difficult to find.
  • Financing fees are not clearly disclosed.
  • Savings depend on large assumed utility-rate increases.
  • Incentives are presented as guaranteed.
  • Important roof or electrical work is excluded.
  • The agreement is difficult to review before signing.

Compare apples to apples

Use the same checklist for every proposal
  • System size: ____ kW
  • Annual production: ____ kWh
  • Cash price: $____
  • Price per watt: $____/W
  • Financing total: $____
  • Battery included: Yes / No
  • Ownership: Homeowner / Third party
  • Major warranties: ____

Ask each provider for an itemized proposal and a copy of the agreement before choosing. A strong proposal should make the price, production assumptions, equipment, financing, and responsibilities easy to understand. If the economics only look good because of optimistic assumptions, compare more carefully.
