There is no responsible single price for every home. The useful starting point is understanding what moves the number, which assumptions are being used, and what you will pay over the life of the arrangement.
What determines solar cost?
The largest drivers are usually system size, equipment, roof and electrical conditions, project scope, batteries, and financing. A larger system may cost more in total but can also change the cost per watt. A difficult roof can add labor without increasing production. A financed proposal can show a manageable monthly payment while producing a higher total amount paid.
System size
Usage, roof area, production goals, and the chosen offset assumption affect how much equipment is designed.
Equipment
Modules, inverters, racking, monitoring, and optional storage can change the scope and cost.
Site work
Roof complexity, electrical upgrades, tree work, permitting, and interconnection can affect labor.
Payment structure
Cash, loans, leases, and PPAs make the relationship between price, payment, ownership, and incentives different.
System size and $/W
Proposals often express a system in kilowatts and may also show a price per watt. Price per watt is calculated by dividing the project price by the system’s wattage. It can help compare similar scopes, but it does not replace reviewing expected production, equipment, roof work, warranties, financing fees, or the amount paid over time.
If a hypothetical 6 kW system had a hypothetical project price of $18,000 before incentives or financing effects, its simple price-per-watt calculation would be $3.00/W. The example is arithmetic only. It is not a quote or recommendation.
Look beyond the headline price
A good comparison connects expected annual production to home usage and electricity-rate assumptions. Ask whether the production estimate includes shading, orientation, weather, degradation, and system losses. Ask what electricity-price escalation is assumed, and whether the price includes roof, electrical, permitting, and interconnection work.
Equipment, roof, and battery adders
Panels, inverters, racking, monitoring, and batteries each solve different problems. More expensive equipment is not automatically better for every roof. Roof age, multiple planes, steep pitches, obstructions, long electrical runs, structural questions, and tree shading can affect scope. Evaluate a battery as a separate line item with a clear reason for including it.

- What production assumptions support the estimate, and what happens if production is lower?
- What is the cash price, financed amount, interest rate, fees, and total paid?
- Who owns the system, handles maintenance, and supports a warranty claim?
- How would the agreement work if the home is sold or refinanced?
- Which current tax, utility, and incentive facts did the proposal assume?
